For years there has always been a dispute over which is the best chipper sauce; until now.

When it comes to curry vs gravy as a chipper sauce of choice, nations have always been divided, or so we thought. However, according to a new survey undertaken to determine once and for all which chipper sauce was the best, the answer has been revealed – and it’s a good one!
The need for a survey to settle this age-old predicament is a testament to its seriousness. It has divided chipper lovers the world over and even caused rifts between friends and families. Now that the top chipper sauce in the UK has been revealed, maybe an Irish survey will occur at some point.
The top chipper sauce has been revealed – curry vs gravy

A recent survey by Pukka, who asked 2,000 people what their preferred chipper sauce was, has finally settled the score between curry and gravy; however, a few other beloved chipper sauces were also mentioned.
Rachel Cranston, Head of Brand Strategy at Pukka, said, “With chip shops at the heart of our story ever since we started making and baking pies 60 years ago, we wanted to settle the curry sauce vs gravy debate once and for all.”
Results showed that neither curry nor gravy got the top spot; ketchup was the winner. However, when it came to the also-rans, chipper curry sauce prevailed as being better than gravy but still only came in third place ahead of gravy in fifth place.
We wonder if this has anything to do with its hangover-curing abilities.
In second place was vinegar which has long been a firm chipper favourite, and in Ireland, they need to be soaked in vinegar to qualify.
Another popular chipper sauce was mayonnaise, which took fourth place, while the rare BBQ sauce and chilli sauce were further down the list, proving not to be as loved as their competitors.
Curry vs gravy – the results are in

The survey, which was undertaken to observe the launch of Pukka‘s new Chip Shop Chicken Curry Pie, revealed that the biggest curry sauce lovers were from Cardiff (44 %) followed by Newcastle upon Tyne (42 %) and Birmingham (39%).
According to Pukka’s saucy survey, the British nation’s favourite sauces were:
- Ketchup
- Vinegar
- Chipper curry sauce
- Mayonnaise
- Gravy
It was also revealed that one in ten people preferred BBQ sauce and chilli sauce, while 8% opted for brown sauce, 7% chose tartare sauce, and just 6% picked salad cream.
The survey showed that 21% of people say that chipper curry sauce is the best sauce you can get at the chipper, and 10% stated they could easily eat the delicious sauce with every meal.
So now that one country has finally sorted out the argument between curry vs gravy, we think it’s about time for a survey to settle whether curry sauce or gravy is better in an Irish chipper – that could certainly be interesting!
