April Fool’s Day is the one day a year when you can be a little bit cruel to your loved ones and get away with it – so make sure you’re prepared.

April Fool’s Day falls on 1 April annually, and it is the one day a year when practical jokers and hoaxsters thrive. If you’re stuck for ideas, here are ten easy pranks to do at home for April Fool’s Day.

April Fool’s Day traditions take on different forms worldwide, with Odesa in Ukraine being the only place in the world to take the day as an official city holiday.

In Ireland, it was traditional to give your unsuspecting victim an ‘important letter’ to bring to someone. That person would then read the letter and ask the messenger to take it to someone else, and so on. When opened, the letter would say, “send the fool further”.

So, if you’re can’t think of any ideas for pranks to play while in lockdown this year, here are ten easy pranks to do at home for April Fool’s Day.

    10. Hide something in your loved one’s drawers – enjoy their reaction

Print out a scary picture or buy a toy spider and place it in your family members’ drawers.

When they are getting dressed in the morning, they’ll be in for a shock!

    9. A leek in the sink – a clever play on words

Put a leek in the sink and ask your loved one, “There’s a leek in the sink. Could you go look at it?”

Enjoy their reaction when they find a green vegetable in the sink instead of a dripping tap.

    8. Swap the sugar and salt – pure evil

Put salt in the sugar shaker and put sugar in the salt shaker. Watch your unsuspecting family members enjoy a salty cup of tea and sweet topping on their dinner!

Just make sure you swap them back before midday, or else you become the fool.

    7. A long-distance prank – just because you can’t see your friends doesn’t mean you can’t prank them

Text your friends a gif of the ‘three dots’ symbol to make them think you’re typing a message.

They’ll be watching their phone and waiting for your message to come through, but it will never arrive!

    6. Hide two things – but tell them you hid three

Take two of your victim’s things and hide them somewhere in your home. However, the next thing you need to do is tell them that you’ve hidden three.

They’ll quickly find the two items but sit back and enjoy as you watch them search for a non-existent third item.

    5. The computer prank – they won’t have a clue

Screenshot your victim’s computer screen before moving all their desktop shortcuts into a folder.

Change their screen saver to the screenshot you just took and watch as they scratch their head wondering why their desktop items won’t open.

    4. Fake damage – scare a house proud parent

To prank a house proud parent, buy a prop to make it look like something in your house is damaged. Some ideas include fake melting ice cream or nail polish, which you can pretend to have spilt on the sofa.

Alternatively, place cling film or spray stain guard over furniture and draw on it with a pen or spill your coffee on it to see their reaction.

We advise testing these on non-valuable surfaces beforehand to make sure you don’t cause any lasting damage!

    3. A trick of the mind – no pranks at all

Tell your friends and family that morning that you won’t be pulling any pranks this year, but act suspicious or giggle to yourself, so they don’t believe you.

However, the trick of this prank is that you don’t actually pull any pranks, but your loved ones will spend the whole morning watching out for what you might have done!

    2. A chocolate surprise – a not so sweet treat

One of the best easy pranks to do at home for April Fool’s Day involves chocolate and Brussels sprouts… can you see where this is going?

Cover some Brussels sprouts in chocolate and offer them to your family members. We promise their reaction will be priceless!

    1. Fake a lottery win – we’re millionaires… not

Everyone dreams of being the lucky one to win the lottery jackpot, so there’s no better way to fool your loved ones this April Fool’s Day than making them think they have!

Record the lottery draw, then go and buy a ticket with those numbers. Give the lottery ticket to your loved one and play the recording. Make sure you watch their reaction as they see each number being called.
