Starting our list off strong is Fionn. Anyone who grew up in Ireland grew up hearing stories of the mighty Fionn mac Cumhaill, or Finn MacCool, one of the biggest heroes of Irish mythology.

As the legend goes, the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim was once home to Fionn and was created by a fight between him and Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn mac Cumhaill features in countless fascinating stories in Irish mythology.

    9. Lugh – a warrior god

Like many characters in Celtic mythology, Lugh was a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a group of supernatural beings.

He is portrayed as a warrior, a king, a saviour, and a master craftsman who was skilled in many fields, including the arts. One of the most famous things he was known for was slaying Balor, the one-eyed chief of the Fomorians.

Now, if you’re looking for an epic baby boy name inspired by Irish mythology that barely anyone else has, Balor should be at the top of your list.

As mentioned before, Balor was the chief of the Fomorians, a group of malevolent supernatural beings and the adversaries of the Tuatha Dé Danann.

In Irish, Balor means ‘the deadly one’. While Balor was known for wreaking havoc and being one of the baddies of Irish mythology, we think this is a pretty badass name. You could even showcase your love for WWE by combining number ten and eight in honour of wrestling legend Finn Balor.

    7. Aengus – the god of love

Known as one of the gods of love in Celtic mythology, Aengus was also associated with youth and poetic inspiration.

Aengus was another member of the Tuatha Dé Danann. He used his skills with poetry and music to charm women, inspire kings, and help him in battle against his enemies.

    6. Chulainn – one of Ireland’s most famous warriors

Another modern Irish name that was inspired by Irish mythology is Chulainn, of course, from the legendary Cu Chulainn.

Cu Chulainn is one of the most famous figures in Irish mythology, known for defending the Irish kingdom of Ulster against its enemies. In many ways, Cu Chulainn is Ireland’s answer to Achilles, having trained the people of Ireland and Scotland to become unmatched fighters.

    5. Diarmuid – a mighty Irish name

In Irish mythology, Diarmuid was the lover of Gráinne, daughter of High King Cormac Mact Airt, and one of Finn MacCool’s warriors.

He makes our list of epic baby boy names from Irish mythology because Gráinne chose Diarmuid over the mighty MacCool, and the pair went on to have five children together.

    4. Dagda – the good god

    Dagda was the good god.

In Irish mythology, Dagda was often referred to as ‘the good god’. Dagda was the supreme god and king of the Tuatha Dé Danann and was often considered a father figure and a druid.

He was one of the most powerful figures in Irish mythology, as he could control life, death, weather, crops, and even the seasons. This is one name that not many people in the modern-day hold, but it’s certainly a very cool one.

    3. Cían – enduring one

10 epic baby boy names from Irish mythology.

Cían was the son of Dian Cecht, the physician for the Tuatha Dé Danann in Celtic mythology. This is one name that has continued to be very common for centuries in Ireland and elsewhere around the world. Cían means ‘enduring one’ in Irish.

    2. Brian – son of Tuireann

Brian was the son of Tuireann.

On the subject of Cían, Brian was his murderer in Irish mythology. He was one of the three songs of Tuireann, along with Luchar and Lucharba.

Cían was the enemy of Tuireann. As such, the three brothers set out to murder their father’s enemy. The three boys shapeshifted into dogs and a hunted Cían. While his brothers were seen as bumbling and impressionable, Brian was the clever leader of the three.

    1. Taranis – god of thunder

Another example of a rare beauty born out of Irish mythology is Taranis. In Celtic mythology, Taranis was the god of thunder. He was the Irish equivalent of the Norse god Thor.

So, if you’re searching for one of the best baby boy names from Irish mythology that is strong and unlike any other, Taranis could be a wonderful option.
