If you’ve done 10/10 of these things, you are 100% Irish

There are certainly several things in the Irish culture that make us stand out from the crowd. So, if you’ve done 10/10 of these things, you are 100% Irish.

Do you consider yourself a true Irish person? Well, there are many things that make a person Irish.

Take, for instance, our love for our country, our love for the pub, our love of gossip, our love of potatoes, and so on.

However, certain things make us truly Irish. If you’ve done 10/10 of these things, you are 100% Irish, so let’s take a look.

    10. Calling a cupboard a press – and that’s what it will always be

It’s in our genetics to call this piece of furniture a press, and it’s not until you see the reaction of a non-Irish person when you say it, that you realise it must truly be an Irish thing.

We’re not entirely sure why we chose to call it a press instead of a cupboard like the rest of the world, but that’s just how it is.

    9. Thanked the bus driver – it’s nice to be nice

If you’ve done these things you are 100% Irish.

Come on, how bad would you feel if you didn’t?

It’s just the norm to thank the bus driver even though we know he’s paid to drive us around. It’s nice to be nice!

    8. Apologised to someone who walked into you – more sorry than the Canadians

    We always say sorry.

We’re an overly polite bunch of people who hate confrontation and always avoid saying no.

So, even if someone bumps into us, we find ourselves apologising to them.

    7. Collected your milk from the doorstep – everyone loves the milkman

If you’ve done these things you are 100% Irish.

Who remembers the good old days when you could just head out to the doorstep in your pyjamas and pick up the fresh milk bottles for your breakfast?

We’re not sure this is common around the rest of the world, but the milkman was always somewhat of a celebrity in the neighbourhood.

    6. Gone abroad with tea bags in your luggage – nevermind the swimwear

You're definitely Irish if you've gone abroad with tea bags in your luggage.

Can you think of anything worse than being away for two weeks on a gorgeous sunny holiday, without your beloved homebrew?

No other tea can compare to the delicious taste of a good Irish cup of tea, so it’s no surprise that it was, and still is, quite common to pack the teabags for your holidays.

    5. Said bye more than once at the end of a call – bye, bye, bye

If you’ve done these things you are 100% Irish.

It’s an Irish trait that we take forever to say goodbye on the phone.

Hanging up is just rude, and we want to be certain the conversation is over. So it takes at least 100 goodbyes before we can safely hang up. Maybe this is what the famous NSYNC song is about?

    4. Brushed off a compliment – ah, sure the state of me

We get so awkward when someone compliments us.
    Credit: commons.wikimedia.org

Yeah, we are certainly not like our friends across the pond who love to be complimented about anything. We hate it!

It’s in our genes to brush it off with some silly comment or assume the person is just being sarcastic. Why can’t we just say thanks?

    3. Eaten a crisp sandwich – the most Irish sambo

If you’ve done these things you are 100% Irish.

Well, if you haven’t done this one on our list ten things, you are definitely not 100% Irish.

Crisp sandwiches are an inherent part of the Irish culture.

    2. Clapped when the plane has landed – a round of applause

Irish people always clap when the plane lands.

Oh god, sure isn’t this just as Irish as a rainy day.

The dreaded clap at the end of the plane journey, which someone always starts and sure enough, we all join in. We don’t want to be rude.

    1. Asked the taxi driver if he’s been busy tonight – avoiding the awkward silence

If you’ve done these things you are 100% Irish.

    Drunken chatter, or genuinely interested?

Us Irish don’t like an awkward silence, especially in a taxi. It’s worse than being in a lift with one other person.

So, we politely ask how their night is going, and they’re only delighted to give us the scoop.

So, if you’ve done these 10/10 things, you are 100% Irish, and if you haven’t, then you should try harder.

There are so many things that just wouldn’t fly, or make sense around the world, but these ten things are only some of what makes us truly Irish. There are many more where that came from.

Some of these you may not even notice because it’s so ingrained in our culture, but you’ll most definitely notice these from here on out.
