James Martin made history recently as he became the first actor with Down syndrome to star in an Oscar-winning movie.

At the graduation ceremony, James said, “I am delighted to be honoured by Ulster University with my honorary doctorate. All my mum’s family went to Ulster University; it holds a special place in our hearts.

“My message to all of you students: never judge a book by its cover, everyone should have a voice, follow your dreams, have fun with your family and friends, laugh lots. I wish you all the best going forward. I have worked very hard to achieve the things I do in life”.

Filmed in Northern Ireland, An Irish Goodbye tells the story of two estranged brothers forced to reunite after their mother’s death.

One of the best Irish movies of recent years, the short film proved a runaway success. It won an IFTA and BAFTA for Best Live Action Short and an Academy Award for Best Short Film.

Of his experience working on the production, Martin said, “We had a great team working on An Irish Goodbye which told a universal story that people really connected with and enjoyed watching. The impact it has had on people with learning difficulties has been very positive”.
