It was announced last year that Karen’s Diner would be opening in Dublin, and that moment finally came last week.

The concept of Karen’s Diner is delivering a deliberately unpleasant dining experience, where staff are instructed to insult customers throughout their meal.
The name comes from the internet slang term Karen, usually used when describing an older, rude, middle-class white woman who demands to “speak to the manager” to belittle the person they’re dealing with.
However, the word Karen has taken on a mind of its own in recent years, and one such way is the Karen Diner chain, which was originally established in Sydney, Australia, in 2021.
Karen’s Diner has opened in Dublin – pay to be insulted on O’Connell Street Upper
Karen’s Diner launched its first restaurant in Ireland just last week with its first outlet on O’Connell Street Upper in Dublin.
Since it opened, videos and reviews detailing customer experiences at Ireland’s new Karen Diner have circulated through the web and social media.
It is actually extremely interesting to see how the “customer service” in Karen’s Diners differs around the world.
Irish people don’t hold back, so the purposeful mistreatment by the waiters is completely different here compared to the likes of the US or Australia.
For example, in one TikTok video, a waitress is seen saying to an actual child, “Don’t f**king walk away from me. Did you read the house rules? Well go outside and read the f**king house rules”.
One of the comments underneath the video reads, “This is normal in Ireland, no need for karens diner lol”.
I can’t think of anything worse – it’s a no from me

Personally, I can’t think of anything worse than paying money out of my pocket to be berated, insulted, and shouted at while sitting down to eat.
Each to their own and all that. The dirty looks, the interruptions, the rudeness, while all done completely in jest, I just couldn’t cope.
Not that the insults would upset me, I just don’t think I could enjoy my meal in that atmosphere, but please correct me if you think I’m wrong on this one.
Would I be intrigued enough by the savagery of Irish insults to see what’s in store? Only time will tell.
Tell us what you think – your experiences at Karen’s Diner
From calling customers sex offenders to actually touching food on their plates, Karen’s Diner chains around the world have gotten in trouble for taking the insults “too far”, according to some customers.
Others will argue that outrageous rudeness is all a part of the experience, so customers should be aware of what they’re getting themselves in for.
It will be interesting to see if Irish humour will be taken as such for any customers of the new Karen’s Diner in Dublin.
