Christmas movies are an Irish tradition, and we certainly have our festive favourites. Discover some of the most popular below.

There are certain Christmas movies you’ll find in every Irish household. How many have you seen?

You’ll have to agree that one of the best things about the festive season in Ireland is the feeling you get when cosied up on a winters evening, watching one of your favourite Christmas flicks.

Now more than ever, it is easy to set up a favourite family movie on your TV, thanks to Amazon Prime and Netflix on-demand, but don’t forget the traditional movies that air on the standard TV channels too.

There is so much choice these days, with new Christmas movies being released every year. However, we Irish like to stick to our favourites and keep it that little bit traditional.

After all, that is what memories are made of. So here are the top five Christmas movies you’ll find in every Irish household this festive season.

    5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas – a family favourite

Christmas is all about family time, especially in Ireland. It is a time when people who haven’t seen each other in a long time come together to celebrate the festive season.

This is no different when it comes to sharing quality time with our closest ones, too.

So, when choosing a Christmas movie, we love the family favourite, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, to bring us closer together on a chilly winter evening.

This movie is a classic based on Dr Seuss 1957 book of the same name. It is still one of the most-watched movies not only in Ireland but across the world.

It definitely feels like Christmas when this is playing on our screens. This is why it makes our list of Christmas movies you’ll find in every Irish household.

    4. Miracle on 34th Street – it’s all about Santa

We all love Miracle on 34th Street.

The spirit of Christmas is definitely watching a Santa-themed movie. This one is an Irish favourite, making it one of the top five Christmas movies you’ll find in every Irish household this year.

The original is from 1947 and starred our very own Maureen O’ Hara. However, there was a remake in 1994 that became another Irish favourite.

However, we do love our classics, and that’s the one you’ll find on our screens.

    3. It’s a Wonderful Life – getting to the heart of Christmas

Many of us might have grown up with this movie playing in the background in our house, a neighbour’s house, or perhaps our grandparents’ house.

That is because it is an age-old festive movie with a deep and meaningful storyline that Irish people just love.

This American family fantasy movie was released in 1946. However, it lives on year after year through our TV screens, where it is played at least a few times over the festive season.

    2. Elf – a feel-good festive story

Elf is a feel-good festive favourite and one of the Christmas movies you'll find in every Irish household.

This has been an Irish favourite since being released in 2003. You will definitely find it playing in every Irish household this Christmas, even more than once.

Irish people love a good comedy, and teamed with a festive theme, Elf makes the ultimate festive family favourite.

Starring Will Ferrell, it tells the story of an ‘oversized’ elf who comes to New York from the North Pole, where he was raised, to find his father and, in turn, bring much needed Christmas spirit to the nation.

We just love the story of Elf, which makes it the kind of movie we can watch over and over again in Ireland.

    1. Home Alone – an absolute classic

This has to be the number one when it comes to our list of Christmas movies you’ll find in every Irish household. Let’s face it, we absolutely love the vibe of this movie.

With it being 31 years old now, it really can be called a classic, and it has been a movie of childhoods since it was released in 1990. This one will never get old in our eyes.

Well, if this didn’t get you in the Christmas mood, we’re not sure what will.

Make sure to watch out for these top five Christmas movies you’ll find in every Irish household. We are sure these will begin to play on our screens as soon as December hits. Personally, we cannot wait.

Irish people absolutely love Christmas time, and Christmas movies for us are a huge thing. So, we love keeping this tradition alive.

We are not entirely sure how Christmas would feel if we didn’t have access to these festive flicks, but we would rather not think about that.

Instead, we are getting the hot chocolate ready and gearing up for our favourite festive reruns this Christmas 2021.
