Father’s Day was celebrated across Ireland yesterday, 17 June. In turn, the nation picked President Michael D. Higgins as Ireland’s favourite dad.

Results from a recent poll by Lottoland have revealed that Ireland’s president Michael D. Higgins is the nation’s favourite dad.

With over a quarter of the entire vote, Michael D. Higgins comfortably took the top spot ahead of a number of household Irish names and notable figures.

With competition like Bono, Ryan Tubridy, and Paul Mescal, Michael D. Higgins was revealed as the ultimate paternal figure for Irish people.

Ahead of Father’s Day yesterday, 17 June, an online poll by lottery company Lottoland showed that 28% of Irish people voted Michael D. Higgins as their “fantasy father”.

As such, he came out on top as the nation’s favourite dad or the ultimate paternal figure of Ireland. It’s no secret that most Irish people are very fond of their president.

While many country leaders around the world have been involved in controversy and scandal during their time in office, Michael D. Higgins has used his time to address glaring social issues like equality, inclusion, racism, sectarianism, and more.

At the same time, he is a much-loved figure across Ireland for his beautiful Bernese Mountain dogs, queuing for the ATM like any other person, the throwback picture of him looking like a hippie legend at a Bob Dylan concert at Slane Castle in 1984, and so many more iconic moments.

While Michael D. Higgins took 28% of the vote, there were other famous Irish faces in the running. Bono came in second place on the list with 18%.

In third place is former Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy with 13%, followed by Paul Mescal with 10% and Niall Horan with 8%. Sports commentator Marty Morrissey was the last Irishman on the list, taking 7th place with 5%.

Lottoland’s Laura Pearson said, “Well, it’s probably no surprise to see President Michael D Higgins crowned as Ireland’s ‘Father of the Nation’ but we didn’t bank on the rock Dad himself, Bono, coming in next and we’re delighted to see the public affection coming in for Ryan Tubridy in as the nation’s favourite younger Dad”.
