A Monaghan-based milkman has achieved international stardom for his milk delivery, beating milkmen across the globe.

Irish milkman wins World Championship for ‘Cheerful Milk Delivery’.

In recent days, a local Monaghan-based Milkman has made international news for winning the World Championship for the most cheerful milk delivery, beating competitors in France, Germany and the USA.

Terry Daly, a local milkman who has been in the business since he was a young lad, has expressed his delight as he takes home the trophy, making the Irish nation proud.

Winning gold, Terry talks about how he became an international symbol and his plans for the future. Here’s the story.

Terry Daly takes home the trophy – a proud moment for Ireland

While many people across the globe dream of winning a World Championship in their industry, Terry Daly of Ballybay, County Monaghan, can tick this incredible achievement off his list.

Talking about his experience as a milkman in his home county, Terry says, “My goal has always been to put Monaghan on the map since it is regarded as the county that Ireland forgot, but I never dreamed this day would come”.

Describing his trade, Terry says that the milkman business has been in his family for generations, and he learned the art of ‘cheerful milk delivery’ from his grandfather and father, whom he thanks for being part of his success.

When asked about his secret about cheerfully delivering milk, he said, “I’ve always had a happy head on me since I was a boy and have always loved milk, so the two naturally went hand in hand”, adding that his happy and satisfied customers are what kept him going all these years.

Speaking to CNN, Terry revealed that his biggest inspiration, apart from his grandfather and father, was Pat Mustard from the iconic Irish TV series Father Ted.

“I always loved watching the Pat Mustard episodes; they always gave me a great laugh, so I started impersonating him by choosing Pat Mustard-inspired clothes, and I even grew a moustache”.

For twenty years, Terry, who runs the milk delivery service ‘Your Daly delivery’, has focused on delivering fresh milk to residents around Monaghan and even parts of Cavan, Louth and occasionally Meath.

“Some people out this way don’t have cars or a way to get to the shops, so I pride myself on delivering fresh milk daily to them – always with a smile”.

Regarding his top-secret strategy to be the best delivery service, Terry added that he always takes time to sit, chat, and a couple of biscuits or cake with the locals as he makes his rounds. “The ladies especially love gossiping with me of a morning”.

Beating out the competition – Ireland’s most successful milkman

Since the World Championships for milk delivery began in 2009, the yearly race has been on to find the world’s best and, most importantly, most cheerful delivery.

This year, Terry went head-to-head with accomplished milkmen around the globe, such as France, Germany, the USA and even India, only to come out on top as the world champion.

While milkmen in France were handing out baguettes with their milk bottles and milkmen in Germany were handing out free steins of beer, the milkmen in India were delivering milk via tuk-tuk while blasting loud Bollywood-style music.

Across the pond, milkmen in the USA were delivering their morning milk in ever-changing fancy dress, which captured worldwide attention. However, Terry prides himself on having the “gift of the gab” that took the trophy home.

Milkmen in Australia caught the attention of the championship judges by delivering their milk on kangaroo back, but they were eventually disqualified for being a potential danger to society.

If there is one thing that Terry has learned from winning the World Championship this year for the ‘most cheerful delivery’, it is to keep things simple, laugh and make time to chat with your customers.

Expressing his goals for the future, Terry revealed that he is determined to open a school for milkmen in his home country to teach the ‘young lads and lasses’ how to find success and happiness as a cheerful milk delivery person.

As Terry soaks up international stardom, the nation celebrates his achievements. President Michael D. Higgins states that he has hired Terry as his personal milk delivery man going forward. Congratulations, Terry, the nation is proud!
