If you’ve spent any time at all living on the Emerald Isle, we can bet you’ll recognise these Irish habits that are as true as ever.
Irish people are truly one of a kind for many reasons, but we certainly have many traits that we may not even notice ourselves.
Often, it’s not until they’re pointed out that we realise how true they are.
Irish people love to laugh at themselves and are rather lighthearted, so these five common habits of Irish people will give you a right laugh.
5. We CANNOT take a compliment – “awk, now, don’t be ridiculous”
Ever noticed that when you compliment an Irish person, they can’t just say “Thank You” like every other nation on the planet?
No, if you say something nice to an Irish person, you’ll be met with responses such as, “Ah, this old thing?”, “Ah no, the state of me”, or even “Ah would you go away with that”.
It would save a lot of confusion if we just accepted the compliment as it is. However, will that ever be a habit we adopt in Ireland? Not any time soon!
4. We talk A LOT – one of the most common habits of Irish people
Conversing with an Irish person is a hard task for many who don’t understand that you need to force your replies in there.
Otherwise, we will take over the whole chat, leaving you utterly confused about what just happened.
An Irish person can literally talk to the wall if they have the opportunity, and that is the main reason why our nation is known for being so warm and welcoming.
They’ll literally talk to everyone, and they probably won’t stop – until you get the confidence to walk away.
This is one of the most common habits of Irish people, but at least it’s a positive one, right?
3. We can’t say NO – it’s just not possible
Irish people are very polite and friendly and are in no way confrontational.
So, if a situation arises that may end negatively, we tend to avoid it, even if that means saying yes or maybe to something we would rather say no to.
Yet another one of the common habits of Irish people that just add to the confusion. Unlike many other nations who say it as it is, Irish people tend to say it as they think sounds best.
This makes us sound very friendly but leaves us in a pickle when we’re not being entirely honest with ourselves. We basically just love to ignore our problems!
2. We LOVE to talk about the weather – our favourite topic
This may be a usual stereotype of the Irish, but, by God, is it true.
No matter what else there is to talk about, the conversations always start with the current state of the weather, leading to the pessimistic forecast of how it’s not going to last, or it’s only going to get worse.
One of the many common traits In Ireland is if it’s hot, it’s TOO hot, and if it’s cold, it’s TOO cold; there’s just no pleasing us, so it will always be a topic of conversation and a reason to complain.
Thus, leading to our number one pick on our list of common habits of Irish people.
1. We complain A LOT – we don’t mean to sound so pessimistic
Okay, so not everyone is like this, of course, but surely we can all agree that complaining is one of the most common habits of Irish people.
Irish people just love complaining, and even if there is genuinely nothing to complain about, we will definitely find a reason.
This is again a stereotype but an entirely true one. It isn’t until someone from abroad points it out or we somehow recognise it ourselves that we realise how true it is.
There are many more to add to the list, including how it takes us a millennium to say goodbye to someone, how we force people to have food or drink even when they don’t want to, how we are not always on time, and just how obsessed with a cup of tea we are.
So these five common habits of Irish people barely scratch the surface. Without these everyday habits, we wouldn’t be who we are, and these traits set us apart from other cultures.
You’ve got to admit, at least we can laugh at ourselves. As they say, if we don’t laugh, we will cry – or complain in our case!
It’s safe to say that these five common habits of Irish people are like the integral cogs in the Irish clock that keeps on ticking, and without these, life would be boring.
So, with that being said, let’s continue to moan, talk the ears off people, and go on and on about the weather as if anyone is really bothered; it makes us a happy nation after all.
