Trends come in cycles, and we can’t deny that the mid-2000s are back with a bang in our wardrobes.

With Y2K amongst one of the most searched tags on Depop, we asked ourselves, how did we actually dress for a night out in Ireland in 2007?

10. Wide belts – the chunkier, the better

An outfit in 2007 was never complete without an elastic and patent-buckled monstrosity to cinch your waist in. Everyone had an assortment of various colours, and if they matched your shoes, all the better.

9. Studs – Mom, it’s not a phase!

Maybe we were going through our emo stage – whatever it was, you’d be guaranteed to see some studs poking out of our clothes for an evening out in 2007.

Belts, cuffs, jeans, anything really could be made that bit ‘edger’ with the addition of a couple of pointy silver pins. Avril Lavigne, eat your heart out.

8. Bubble hem dresses and skirts – creating an illusion of hips we didn’t have

There’s something so cute and romantic about a puff hem skirt. Paired with a boob-tube top half, honestly, this is sort of an unmatched combo.

7. Chandelier earrings – nothing says ‘night out’ like a couple of light fixtures dangling down the side of your face

Watch out, red carpet, here’s how Irish people dressed for a night out in 2007. If you were lucky, you got some nice chandelier earrings that were actually good quality and may even be cute enough to wear today.

However, most of the time, you’d come home from an evening with half the gems gone and red swollen lobes.

6. Long pendant necklaces – can someone tell us why we were obsessed with owls?

A look was never complete until you tossed a long necklace over your head. Perfectly hitting the top of your chunky belt, the adornment at the end was often that of an owl, with tacky beady eyes and a menacing look. Why we ever thought this was chic, I’ll never know.

5. Dresses over jeans – this is not a drill

We hate to say it, but we’ve seen more than our fair share of terrible outfits in 2023, and this monstrosity from 2007 is one of them.

Ashley Tisdale chic, it’s almost as if we were so embarrassed by our bodies that we need not one heavy-duty clothing item to cover it, but two.

4. Tall Uggs – today’s mini Uggs are a triggering throwback to this horror

If you were nipping out to the pub for a quick one after a day in the shops adding to your chunky belt collection, you’d probably make it out in your high Ugg boots.

Caving insoles, water stains and just a general pong of damp off them, we have no idea why we popularised these in such a wet country.

3. Foundation lips – a mistake we’re still recovering from

This may not be how Irish people dressed for a night out in 2007, but there can be no mistake that it was an absolute staple.

If there’s one thing we can’t bring back in this Y2K resurgence, it’s the foundation lips. Why we thought it was cute to match our cheeks with our mouths, I’ll never know.

2. Deep v-neck t-shirts – please spare us your chest hair

Of course, it wasn’t all women making these fashion faux-pas – the men have a lot to say for themselves as well. With deep v’s becoming a trend, it became increasingly difficult to see a man in a t-shirt that didn’t show off a bit of cleavage.

1. Skinny scarves – I blame the Jonas Brothers

Disney stars have a lot to own up to when it comes to influencing the fashion sphere of the mid-2000s – skinny scarves being one of them.

Men, in particular, enjoyed a slim scarf in a pop of colour, complete with some threaded tassels at the end. Love the idea of injecting a pop of colour, but please, lads, let’s not bring this one back.
