AI picks KEANE and BEST in greatest-ever all-Ireland soccer XI.

North and south, the island of Ireland has produced some incredible football players over the last number of centuries, some of whom are regarded as the top players in their fields.

Thus, like any greatest-ever XI, it is never easy to choose who should be the 11 chosen at the very end, and it is the same here with the greatest-ever all-Ireland soccer XI. So, we entrusted this task to AI and ChatGPT to see what they would come up with.

What is ChatGPT? – the newest form of AI

ChatGPT is artificial intelligence’s latest marvel. It is a natural language processing tool which enables you to have human-like conversations with your own device.

The new device has the ability to answer a range of questions, broad or defined, simple or complex. The more specific you get, too, the better quality of answers you can get.

So, we asked ChatGPT a very simple question: “What is the best dream all-time Ireland soccer starting XI?”.

It came up with the following in a 4-4-2 formation:

    Pat Jennings – goalkeeper

Claiming the goalkeeper position on the all-Ireland soccer XI is the legendary Pat Jennings, who played 119 times for Northern Ireland. Jennings also had an incredible club career, playing 472 times for Spurs and 237 times for rivals Arsenal.

    Seamus Coleman – right-back

At right-back in ChatGPT’s choices for the greatest-ever All-Ireland XI is Everton stalwart Seamus Coleman.

He signed for the Toffees for only £60,000 back in 2009 and later became captain of the club. He also has earned 68 caps for Ireland.

    Paul McGrath – centre-back

Who else but Paul McGrath at centre-back? He is one of the top defenders to have played in the Premier League, shining for the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa. He played for Ireland at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups.

    Billy Bingham – centre-back

The second centre-back on the list of the greatest-ever all-Ireland XI is Billy Bingham, from the north. He played for Glentoran, Sunderland, Luton Town, Everton, and Port Vale in an established career.

Given that Bingham usually played outside-right, we’re not sure if this is a mistake or a tactical masterstroke by ChatGPT…

    Denis Irwin – left-back

ChatGPT, unsurprisingly, has chosen Manchester United legend Denis Irwin as left back in this side. Irwin lined out 56 times for Ireland and played 368 games for Man United, where he won seven Premier League titles.

    George Best – right midfield

Probably the greatest player from the island of Ireland of all time and one of the best footballers of all time. Best was a mesmerising footballer in his day who goes down as a great for Manchester United.

    Roy Keane – centre midfield

Roy Keane can probably lay claim to being the second-greatest-ever Irish player. Keane is also regarded by many as the greatest Premier League captain.

He led Manchester United to numerous Premier League titles, domestic trophies, and a treble which included the Champions League in 1999.

    Liam Brady – centre midfield

The third stunning midfielder to make the greatest-ever all-Ireland soccer XI. Brady is one of Arsenal’s best-ever players, and he later won two Serie A titles with Juventus.

    Danny Blanchflower – left midfield

At left midfield is Danny Blanchflower. He earned 56 caps for Northern Ireland and made 693 club appearances, including stints at Aston Villa and Spurs. He captained the latter during the double-winning season of 1960-61.

    Robbie Keane – striker

Ireland’s top goalscorer of all time. Who else but Keano for the first striker position? He is most remembered at club level for his time spent at Spurs, while for Ireland, he played in the 2002 World Cup as well as the 2012 and 2016 Euros. He scored 68 goals for the national team.

    Niall Quinn – striker

Niall Quinn claims the second striker berth in ChatGPT’s greatest-ever all-Ireland soccer XI. Quinn played with Keane at the 2002 World Cup, as well as the 1990 World Cup and 1988 Euros. He scored 21 times for Ireland in 92 caps.
