The much-loved sitcom has been praised for showing what life was like in 1990s Derry, as the writer confirms it is coming to a close after its third season.

Fans of the Channel 4 sitcom will be devastated to hear that the upcoming Derry Girls season three will be the last.

The show’s creator Lisa McGee made the announcement on Twitter today to the dismay of many Derry Girls fans.

The show has proved successful not only in Ireland but also across the water in the U.K. and the U.S.A, too.

The end of an era – we’ll miss our Derry Girls

Derry Girls captured the hearts of many around the world.

The show’s creator Lisa McGee made a statement on Twitter today revealing that Derry Girls season three will be the last.

Reflecting on her time with the show over the last couple of years, she wrote, “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series.

“Derry Girls is a coming of age story following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase, which was a small, magical window of time.”

A love story to her hometown – one that resonates with many

McGee goes on to explain that she created the show as a love story for her hometown.

A Derry girl herself, she knows exactly what it was like to be a teenager in 1990s Derry. And this is what made the show such a success.

Incorporating much of her real-life experience, if somewhat exaggerated, McGee created characters that we all loved and related to.

She continued, “Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it, and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved.”

Thanks to those who inspired it – as Derry Girls season three will be the last

Announcing the sad news that Derry Girls season three would be the last, McGee made sure to thank everyone who inspired and supported her hilarious script.

She wrote, “I’d like to thank the people of Derry and Northern Ireland for getting behind us.”

Closing her statement, McGee teased us with the potential of more to come for our Derry girls – and boy – in the future.

She wrote, “Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle, and James will return in some other guise someday, but for now, this is us.”

Anticipation for season three – the best one yet

First airing in 2018, fans worldwide fell in love with the hilarious characters and their witty one-liners.

Although Derry Girls season three will be the last, we can’t wait to see our favourite kids from Derry on screen for the third and final season.

McGee stated on Twitter, “We’re excited to start filming this series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure.”

We all know the day had to come eventually, but that doesn’t mean we can’t mourn the loss of one of Northern Ireland’s best series of recent years.

On the bright side, though, we can’t wait for season three, which has been lauded as the best one yet. Due for release next year, fans from far and wide are eagerly awaiting one last hilarious Derry adventure.

And, we bet this won’t be the last we hear from talented Derry girl Lisa McGee.
