One of the most popular shows of the 21st century so far, Dexter continues to hold sway in contemporary pop culture. A limited sequel followed, and the show will also get the prequel treatment, thanks to the upcoming Dexter: Original Sin.

Fans will surely tune in to see a more in-depth look at the origins of everyone’s favourite serial killer. Irish fans have extra reason to tune in, with an up-and-coming Irish actor cast in the title role.

Starring Michael C Hall, Dexter debuted in 2006 and ran for eight seasons until its much-maligned finale in 2013.

It follows the titular forensic technician who combines his professional nous with his sociopathic tendencies to become a vigilante serial killer, whose victims have evaded traditional justice.

Dexter spawned a limited series prequel, Dexter: New Blood, in 2021, set ten years after the original show’s finale, and an upcoming prequel, Dexter: Original Sin.

Patrick Gibson was born in Dublin in 1995. His fledgling career has seen him so far appear in films like The Darkest Minds and Tolkien. Most notably, he played a key role in American mystery drama TV show The OA.

Gibson beat competition from Seana Kerslake, Peter Foott, and one of Ireland’s biggest contemporary stars, Barry Keoghan, to win the Rising Star Award at the 2017 IFTAs.

Dexter: Original Sin will see Gibson take up the title role and bring the vigilante serial killer back to our screens.

He will appear alongside American actors Christian Slater and Molly Brown, who will portray Dexter’s adoptive father, Harry Morgan, and sister, Debra Morgan, respectively.

According to streaming platform Paramount+, Dexter: Original Sin takes place in Miami in 1991. It “follows Dexter as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer”.

The synopsis continues, “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness.

“With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar.

“This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department”.

Dexter: Original Sin will stream in Ireland on the aforementioned Paramount+. No release date has been released as yet.
