A naming expert has predicted the most popular baby names for 2024, thanks to an analysis of trending baby names.
SJ Strum, a baby names consultant and parenting vlogger, has recently revealed her predictions for 2024’s popular naming trends.
In her role as a baby expert, SJ teamed up with the greetings card company Thortful to conduct an analysis of trending baby names.
The findings of the research suggested that in 2024, the most popular baby names will be those which have been influenced by media such as TV shows and movies.
The most popular baby names for 2023 – 2023’s most popular names for babies
The top ten most popular baby names for girls for 2023 were as follows: Olivia, Emma, Amelia, Sophia, Charlotte, Ava, Isabella, Mia, Luna and Evelyn.
For the boys, the top ten most popular baby names for 2023 were Noah, Liam, Oliver, Elijah, Mateo, Lucas, Levi, Leo, Ezra, and Luca.
Interestingly, in 2023, for the first time in five years, there was a new top baby boy name – Noah.
Noah overtook Liam for the number one spot for boys. For the girls, the top three baby girl names remained unchanged. As a result, Olivia, Emma, and Amelia held onto their positions of first, second and third, respectively.
Most popular baby names for 2024 – inspired by media
According to the analysis of baby names, the searches revealed that ‘Disney princess names’ have increased by 120% in the last three months.
“Disney Names are one of the most common requests we get at the baby name consultancy: Baby Name Envy,” said Strum.
Strum believes that the popularity of Disney names is thanks to celebrities leading the trend. For example, influencer Molly Mae Hague chose Bambi for her daughter’s name. Moreover, TV presenter Stacey Dooley chose the name Minnie for her daughter.
According to Strum, one of the names quickly rising in popularity is the name Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. “I predict it will hit the top 20 most popular girl names in 2024,” she suggested.
The influence of the media on the naming process – the popularity of Disney and Barbie
According to Strum, the analysis would suggest that Barbie and Disney-inspired names will be very popular next year.
These names include Gus, Bambi, Margot and Ken, which are all expected to be chosen quite frequently among new parents.
“More subtle names from Disney are Gus, after one of Cinderella’s mice or Flynn from Tangled. For girls, Esmerelda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one to use quickly as the remake is rumoured to be released in 2024,” she explained.
