If you think you know Ireland well, you might be wrong. In fact, there are a few things that many people don’t get quite right about our small country.
There are many things people know about Ireland and many things that make us famous, but then there are the things that people always get wrong about Ireland, which make us furious.
Think you know what they are? Well, there may be a few on our list that you can relate to. However, first and foremost, we are here to set the record straight about our beloved country.
So, here are the top ten things people always get wrong about Ireland
10. We only drink Guinness – it’s great, but we have plenty of other favourite drinks
The world knows Guinness as being one of the most famous beverages to hail from our country, and from what you see on TV or in movies, it appears that we always have a Guinness in our hand.
Believe it or not, many Irish people are privy to a glass of wine, a bottle of cider, or even a G&T.
So, thinking that we all only drink Guinness is definitely one of the things people always get wrong about Ireland.
9. Irish food is boring – full and flavoursome
Those who have not tried our amazing cuisine tend to think it is boring, especially when they hear it consists mainly of vegetables, meat, and potatoes, like many other countries in the world.
However, the flavours and recipes in Irish cuisine are so unique, hearty, and delicious that once you try a traditional meal in Ireland, boring will be the last word you will use to describe it.
8. Everyone is a farmer – one of Ireland’s greatest divides
Hollywood created the notion that all Irish people are farmers, but that’s simply not the case.
Many people work in cities these days, and the number of people that make a living solely from farming has diminished greatly.
7. It always rains – we get sunshine sometimes, too
Our green landscape may come down to the fact that we do get more rain than the average country, but that doesn’t mean it ALWAYS rains.
Many people who visit Ireland are surprised to know that the sun actually exists here. We even get heatwaves if you are lucky. We like to call our weather type ‘changeable’.
6. We use miles – only in the north
We may have used miles to measure distance in the past, but since 2005, all cars and road signs display kilometres per hour.
However, don’t get confused when driving north where the road signs will revert back to miles as they use in the UK.
5. We are not in the EU – one of the things people always get wrong about Ireland
Relating the fact that many people still think we are British, one of the things that people always get wrong about Ireland is that we were involved in Brexit and hence have left the EU.
However, the Republic of Ireland is still very much part of the EU.
4. Its extremely expensive – only in certain areas
Forget about Temple Bar and the sorts because these places do not give the real idea of how much things cost in Ireland.
There is a huge difference between tourist prices and local prices, just like anywhere. So, shop around, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
3. We don’t speak English – it’s the most prominent language in Ireland
We are sure that some out there have had the experience of people being shocked at the fact that Irish people do, in fact, speak fluent English.
Irish may be our official language, but it is not spoken as widely as English in Ireland today.
2. We are part of the UK – one of the things people always get wrong about Ireland
While the six counties of Northern Ireland are indeed part of the UK, the remaining 26 counties of Ireland are not.
Anyone hailing from the Irish Republic won’t be happy to hear the words, “Sure, it’s all the same.”.
1. All we do is drink – we aren’t all alcoholics
For sure, this is one of the main things people always get wrong about Ireland: that all we do is drink.
While we are the sole reason for the export of such famous drinks as Guinness Stout, Jameson Irish Whiskey, and the delectable Baileys Cream Liqueur, it doesn’t mean we just drink our days away.
This is a stereotype that may be blown a little out of proportion.
Of course, there aren’t many things that people get wrong about Ireland, thankfully. However, hopefully, we have set the record straight will our top ten list of common misconceptions.
