Mescal proudly represents the Irish in his playlist entitled ‘Songs to make you feel something’.
Paul Mescal is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after Irish actors of the moment, and his latest film All of Us Strangers is due to be released this week.
The film, which is directed by Andrew Haigh, has already been well-received by critics, currently standing with a 95% approval rate on the movie review website Rotten Tomatoes.
But alongside film and drama, it seems that the Kildare native is a bit of a music buff also.
In collaboration with streaming giant ‘Spotify’, Mescal has put together a carefully curated mixtape entitled ‘Songs to make you feel something’.
Some of the songs from the soundtrack of his haunting new film are included. But what else can we glean from the actor’s playlist?
He’s made sure to represent Ireland – what Paul Mescal’s Spotify playlist tells us about Ireland’s top actor
Proud wearer of GAA shorts (to the internet’s delight), Mescal has been known to whip out his Irish language skills at red-carpet events.
After being routinely claimed as ‘British’ by outlets like the BBC, he took to the internet in 2020 to respond. His tweet, simply reading “I’m Irish”, was the most-liked tweet of the year in Ireland. You can check out more times the British media claimed the Irish as their own here.
It is clear that this boy has not forgotten his roots, and we can clearly see this in his playlist. Irish artists play a big part here, including Damien Rice, Junior Brother, Lisa Hannigan, Hozier, The Gloaming, and Ye Vagabonds.
Paul may be a softboi – no shame in it
There is no shame in it, but the self-proclaimed fan of indie-darling Mitski is giving some indie softboi energy here.
With tracks like ‘I Need My Girl’ from The National and ‘Between the Bars’ by Elliot Smith, Mescal clearly has a fond appreciation for soft indie-folk stylings.
He’s a big fan of Ye Vagabonds – the act that featured most
While there is no shortage of songs by Irish artists on the playlist, one act featured more than the rest.
Dublin folk duo Ye Vagabonds are included three times with songs ‘The Foggy Dew’, ‘Lowlands of Holland’ and ‘Half Blind’. It is clear that the Oscar nominee is a fan.
There doesn’t appear to be bad blood between him and Phoebe Bridgers – Julien Baker appreication
If rumours of Mescal’s relationship with emo-folk sensation Phoebe Bridgers didn’t quite break the internet, it certainly gave it a good rattle.
While the two have since parted ways, it doesn’t seem that there is bad blood between them. Bridgers even still follows Mescal’s mum on Instagram.
Although Bridger’s music doesn’t make an appearance here, the music of her boygenius bandmate does. ‘Claws in Your Back’ by Julien Baker features near the end of the playlist.
Paul’s taste in music is well appreciated – thousands of likes
Whether partly to do with his huge (and growing) fan base or not, it is clear that Mescal’s taste in music is well appreciated by others.
Running at approximately 3 hours (and 48 songs), the mixtape has been liked more than 57 thousand times. It is clear the listeners are feeling something.
Whether or not you share the actor’s taste in music, the playlist is certainly a nice way for the Mescalites to get a glimpse into their hero’s favourite tracks.
