It’s no secret that the Irish are blessed with a unique sense of humour, known for their sarcasm, dry wit, and self-deprecation.

If you’ve ever been to Ireland or met an Irish person, you’ll be aware of the Irish sense of humour. Sarcastic, dry, and often mildly offensive, Irish humour truly does exist in a league of its own. Thus, these tweets definitely prove that Irish humour is elite.

And it’s not just the professional comedians who have us laughing until our bellies hurt. Rather, it can often be our friends, family, or random strangers at the pub.

Now, social media has brought this unique sense of Irish comedy to a whole new stage. So, here are ten tweets that prove Irish humour is elite.

    10. I mean… it’s plausible ‒ the next best thing

I am now supporting America in the World Cup because some of them could be irish people who were sold by the nuns

    — David O'Doherty (@phlaimeaux) June 28, 2014

Now, Ireland is a sporting nation, but we aren’t often known to get too far in international soccer, usually going out in the early rounds of tournaments such as the World Cup.

Well, when you can’t support the home team, sometimes you have to go for the next best thing. A play on Ireland’s dark history, this is one of our favourite tweets that prove Irish humour is elite.

    9. Definitely a Dublin bus ‒ we know that pattern when we see it

That's the floor on a Dublin bus https://t.co/do9qLyfTNG

    — Jordan Towell (@JordanTowell2) August 3, 2021

SpaceX engineer Andrew Rader posted this picture to Twitter, claiming it was 500 million stars at the heart of the Andromeda Galaxy taken by the Hubble telescope.

Don’t lie to us, Andrew. We Irish aren’t stupid. We know you just took a photo of the floor when you were on the Dublin bus.

    8. We just want to know where this thought came from ‒ he must have been starving

How much of the Book of Kells could you eat before the security stops you

    — joyless golem (@culchiephobic) June 14, 2021

Set in Trinity’s revered Long Room Library, the Book of Kells is one of the most popular attractions in Dublin. The only question on this guy’s mind, though, was whether or not he could eat it. We’re not sure it would be worth the paper cuts, to be honest.

    7. Don’t come for Super Valu like that ‒ two Irish gems

    https://twitter.com/fluffernutter99/status/1422910975481683977

Now, we aren’t going to put Dunnes and Super Valu in competition with each other. They’re both Irish gems that should be cherished.

But we certainly won’t see anyone slagging Super Valu (even Matt Damon is a fan, after all). We’re glad to see they were sticking up for themselves on social media.

    6. The magic of Dublin ‒ invest in a decent bike lock

You know what Dublin can be magic and by magic I mean it’s pretty good at making my bike disappear

    — Pillip (@Lil__Philll) April 10, 2021

Ahh, Dublin. Known for its cobbled streets, rich history, vibrant culture, and em…moderately high crime rates?

We love how this tweet sums up the unique magic of Dublin. Maybe just make sure you have a decent bike lock if you’re parking up in the city.

    5. That awkward supermarket interaction ‒ Paul Mescal saying it all

the eye contact you make with the staff member when the self service machine won’t stop saying “unexpected item in bagging area” pic.twitter.com/6t9ByY9b2g

    — simon ferocious (@spiceslag) March 21, 2021

We have all found ourselves in that situation at the local supermarket; we’re minding our own business, putting our shopping through the self-service checkout, when we hear,

“Unexpected item in the bagging area.”

Do these machines not realise that we specifically came to these tills to avoid human interaction?

    4. Visiting Donegal ‒ don’t bother if you don’t have a car

    🏆Achievement: Passes driving test

So, we all know that Ireland is a relatively rural island with a, let’s say, below-par public transport network.

It’s hard enough to get from one place to another at the best of times. County Donegal really does take this to the extreme, which is why this is one of the tweets that prove Irish humour is elite.

    3. Ireland’s lack of wifi connection ‒ taking one for the team

i live in rural ireland, if the vaccine turns me into a wifi hotspot it would solve me a lot of problems

    — Ciara 🇵🇸🇵🇸 (@ciarahatesu) April 17, 2021

Remember when conspiracy theorists were claiming that the COVID-19 vaccine was actually injecting us all with 5G?

Yeah, we don’t really see the logic in this either. However, this tweet really turned the argument on its head, showing that this may not be such a bad thing for those living in rural Ireland.

    2. Seems suspicious ‒ a bit too professional

All photos of the Blarney Stone look like an old fella trying to dispose of a body pic.twitter.com/X7JgTc1ZGL

    — Fuchsia MacAree (@fuchsiamacaree) May 7, 2014

This tweet had us laughing out loud at how accurate it was.Feel free to kiss the Blarney Stone if you find yourself in County Cork. But all we’re saying is do so at your own risk.

    1. Why does it always happen to us ‒ one of our favourite tweets that prove Irish humour is elite

Me encountering the most minor obstacle pic.twitter.com/spfCSBcWN4

    — Brian (@spoonitoria) June 9, 2021

Now, the Irish have faced their fair share of suffering, hardship, and discrimination throughout history. And you can bet we won’t let you forget it.

Slightest inconvenience? Is this because I’m Irish? Ps thanks, Azelia, for having our backs.
