Channel 4 has just announced the commissioning of a new comedy thriller called How To Get To Heaven From Belfast.

The show comes from the brains behind the world-renowned comedy hit Derry Girls, Lisa McGee.

Written and created by McGee, the show will follow the lives of Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara, three women in their late 30s who have been friends since school. Read on to find out more.

Lisa McGee struck gold with the success of Derry Girls. The show was adored by fans in the motherland and all over the world for nearly five years. It quickly became an instant cult classic.

After hinting at the new series at awards ceremonies and recent interviews, How To Get To Heaven From Belfast is the latest comedy thriller by Lisa McGee that has been commissioned by Channel 4.

The show will follow the lives of school friends Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara. Now in their late 30s, the three live very different lives.

According to Channel 4, Saoirse is “a successful writer with a compulsion to hit the self-destruct button”. Robyn is “a sweary, stressed out mother of three young boys”. Then there’s Dara, “a full-time carer of an elderly parent, who hasn’t managed to move out of her teenage bedroom”.

The story starts to take shape when the three friends each receive an email informing them of the death of an old classmate and friend, Greta.

When the three decide to attend Greta’s wake, all is not what it seems. Soon, the women become caught up in a dark and twisted mystery.

Their adventure will take them from their roots in Belfast, with its dark history, to the rural streets of Donegal.

As a Belfast-centred series compared to her native Derry, McGee joked, “There is a character from Derry in it before I get banned from the old hometown”.

The show has been given the green light and has been commissioned by Channel 4. The series will take place across eight episodes.

On making the show, Lisa McGee said, “I feel so incredibly lucky to be making another show for the phenomenal Channel 4 and to be doing it with Hat Trick Productions again and the creative team behind Derry Girls, the mighty Liz Lewin and Caroline Leddy, is just a dream.

“I’ve wanted to make a comedy thriller set in Northern Ireland for SUCH a long time. I cannot wait to share these flawed funny women with everyone”.

Head of comedy at Channel 4, Charlie Perkins, commissioned the show, saying, “We can’t wait to bring Lisa’s next world to life for all those who already love her work and many more to come”.
