Spotting an Irish culchie by the clothes they choose to wear has never been easier, so take a look at these iconic culchie fashion trends you might recognize.

A culchie is an Irish person who hails from the countryside (or anywhere outside the city if you ask a Dub), and there are some surefire ways to spot a culchie around town, merely by their fashion choices.

One of the main ways is by observing their unique fashion trends, which only a culchie could love, so if you see someone sporting one of these items, you can almost guarantee that they are a culchie.

Unfortunately, while many of these items guarantee comfort, they don’t always stand out as being on trend, but you will have no luck if you try to change this tradition. So, with that being said, here are the top five culchie fashion trends out there.

    5. Blue jeans with dress shoes – the best culchie outfit for a night on the town

If you are on a night out, you will surely spot a couple of lads sporting this trend which is a top choice for Irish culchie fashion. Dressing up means pairing dress shoes with blue jeans in the eyes of a culchie, and you will almost always know you’ve spotted one when you see this iconic combo.

This unique culchie outfit is generally made up of bootcut jeans with either black or brown shoes, but whichever way they wear it, it is a surefire way to spot a culchie by this fashion choice.

    4. The tracksuit – the comfy yet dressy option

One of the notable trends for Irish culchie fashion is the tracksuit, a typical outfit to wear to any social occasion.

Switching your muddy wellies and ripped checked shirt for a clean and well-ironed tracksuit is a big deal for a culchie, and you know he means business when he wears this one.

There are no limits to where a culchie will wear his tracksuit, be it in the pub, a restaurant, or even a concert, the comfy yet dressy tracksuit is one that a culchie can always rely on. Certainly a far-cry from that seen within traditional Irish clothing!

    3. The paddy cap – the traditional culchie fashion item

If you head to cities like Dublin, Cork or Galway, you won’t always see the average joe wearing a paddy cap, but if you head out into the country, this will be an everyday fashion item among the culchies.

The traditional Irish tweed paddy cap is commonly worn by culchies, who love nothing more than keeping the tradition alive, and supporting Irish fashion is their way of doing it.

The older generation may traditionally wear it, but that’s not to say you won’t witness young lads out there sporting paddy caps.

    2. The checked shirt – the one for any occasion

The checked shirt is one of the most common clothing items depicting Irish culchie fashion in all its glory.

This is a staple in any culchies wardrobe, and they will have one in every colour and for every occasion, be it the farm shirt, the wedding shirt, the date night shirt or even the pub shirt, there is a check shirt for every possible situation, making it a firm favourite among the culchies out there.

This is also one of the best fashion items to give as a gift, as there are endless designs and colours to choose from, which the culchies in your life will appreciate.

    1. The GAA jersey – one of the most iconic Irish culchie fashion trends

While many sports lovers in Ireland occasionally wear a GAA jersey when their county team is playing a match, the culchie’s way of wearing this iconic Irish fashion item is slightly different.

No matter what the occasion and whether there is a match on or not, a culchie will always have his local GAA shirt on hand.

This is one of the most common ways to spot a culchie abroad, given that he loves to pair this with shorts and head down to the beach, or pair it with some jeans for a night of drinking.

Alas, many of us wouldn’t be caught dead in some of these items, but for the culchies out there who love to don these ‘questionable items’, we applaud you.

So, next time you wonder if you’ve met a culchie or not, take a quick look at what they are wearing to see if they fit into any of these Irish culchie fashion trends. Plus, if you are starting to wonder if you might be a culchie, check our article on that here.
