While many Irish dishes feature fresh vegetables, homegrown potatoes, and succulent meat, others are much less healthy, but that doesn’t mean they are not just as popular. Irish people love their food, and these ten dishes are some of the most popular but unhealthy Irish dishes.

So, let us unveil ten greasy but great Irish dishes that clog the arteries.

When it comes to greasy and indulgent Irish dishes, you cannot overlook taco fries, which hit the spot after a few pints or the morning after too many. This popular dish, which features a blend of Irish and Mexican flavours, is available at most takeaways, but they are not the healthiest option.

    9. An Irish trio – a favourite at the Chinese takeaway

What if we told you that the combination of fried rice, deep-fried chips, and curry sauce was a meal in Ireland?

Well, this ever-popular Chinese takeaway option is one of the nation’s favourites, but given the amount of greasy fat involved – which is why we love it – it’s not recommended for daily consumption.

    8. Chip sandwich – a hearty and quick snack

Irish people are big lovers of putting everything on a sandwich, from crisps and bananas to chips and sausages; it all makes perfect sense.

Since we love our bread fluffy and white and our chips deep fried and soaked in oil, you can imagine that this sandwich is one of the greasy but great Irish dishes we can’t help but crave.

    7. Battered sausage & chips – one of the best greasy but great Irish dishes

Yes, the Irish love to deep fry things, and one such thing we love is the iconic battered sausage, which obviously has to come with a side of grease-soaked chips to complete the meal.

Together this combination will definitely clog the arteries, but that will never stop the Irish nation from popping down to their local chippy for their fix.

    6. Breakfast roll – a nation’s favourite

What’s just as good as an Irish breakfast? An Irish breakfast roll, of course. This Irish meal is available at most delis around the country and consists of sausages, rashers of Irish bacon, black and white pudding, fried eggs, and your choice of sauce, all packed into a fluffy bread roll.

    5. Bacon & cabbage – salty-fatty goodness

The Irish love salty food, and this iconic Irish dish is one of the saltiest. Bacon and cabbage are generally served with mashed potato. Although it is healthy when eaten in moderation, the saltiness and fattiness of the bacon make this one of the tastiest but unhealthiest ingredients of the meal.

    4. Fish & chips – a seaside snack

One of the top greasy but great Irish dishes has to be fish and chips, which can be sourced nationwide. In the minds of the Irish, the fattier, the better, meaning the fish needs to be battered and crispy and the chips covered in salt and vinegar.

    3. Boxty – dating back to the 1700s

This traditional Irish potato pancake bread is not so bad if consumed in moderation and can be made healthily. However, the recipes of today and added toppings make it fattier than ever.

Boxty is made with grated raw potatoes, mashed potatoes, flour, and buttermilk, which is pan-fried in butter or oil and served with fillings like bacon, cheese, or vegetables.

    2. Spice bag – a big bag of spicy goodness

The spice bag is one of the most sought-after dishes from the local Chinese takeaway, combining deep-fried salt and chilli chips, salt and chilli shredded chicken, red and green peppers, fried onions, chilli peppers, and a whole host of spices to make it an authentic spice bag.

Even though there are some vegetables in this meal, it is undoubtedly unhealthy.

    1. Full Irish breakfast – A beast of a meal

Yes, when it comes to greasy but great Irish dishes, the winner has to be the full Irish breakfast, which features a whole plate of fried foods.

We love frying our food so much that it is common to fry Irish soda bread alongside the already greasy meal, which consists of sausages, puddings, fried eggs, fried tomatoes, and optional beans, hashbrowns, and fried mushrooms.

These greasy Irish meals are beloved for their rich flavours and comforting qualities. While they may not be the healthiest options, they are perfect for when you’re in the mood for some satisfying comfort food.
