Daragh Curran, AKA the Guinness Guru, has made it his life mission to find the best pints of the black stuff up and down the country. Now, he has ranked the counties according to the pints they serve.
The subject of finding the best pint of Guinness in Ireland can be a problematic and divisive topic. Everybody thinks their own is the best.
The Guinness Guru is here to humble the nation as he has scored the counties based on their Guinness all the way from the north to the south.
The Guinness Guru – an advocate and a critic
The Guinness Guru has made a name for himself by rating pints of the black stuff all over the country. He has gained a huge following on social media through his reviews.
Speaking to Casino Source, the Guinness Guru said, “Ask me that ten years ago I would say “What cult following?”.
“Ask me now and I would tell you it’s down to social media – not blowing smoke up my own arse. Back in 2013, when I was a young budding 20-year-old, to order a pint of Guinness was considered odd. It was perceived as an ‘old man’s drink’.
“If you sit and drink with a group of young lads now they will talk just as much about the Guinness as they will football and other general male topics.
The best pint of Guinness in Ireland – the City of Tribes
The method behind the madness, scores and surveys from both the Guinness Guru and Guinness Advisor were used to create a scoring system.
- Over 9 – Excellent
- 8 and over – Great
- Between 7-8 – Good
- Between 6-7 – Mediocre/Average
- Below – Bad
Galway has come out as the top spot for Guinness in Ireland. With no pub scoring less than a ‘great’ eight, it seems a challenge to spot a bad pint of Guinness in Galway.
In particular, Taaffes Bar in the city came out at the very top as it earned an elusive score of 9.1/10. After Galway, Limerick came out second with a score of 8.42/10, followed by Kerry with 8.31/10. Going for pints is undoubtedly one of the top things that Irish people do in their spare time.
The worst pint of Guinness in Ireland – sorry, Kildare
Sadly, Kildare came out as the worst place for a pint of Guinness in the country, with a less than appealing score of 7.
Not far behind it are the two northern counties of Antrim and Fermanagh. Derry came out as the best place for Guinness in the north with a score of 8.2/10.
Surprisingly, Dublin comes out at the bottom half of the list of the best and worst pint of Guinness in Ireland, with a score of 7.95/10. It is home, however, to some fantastic pints.
However, the Guinness Guru responded to these ‘slanderous claims’ by saying, “I can’t help but stand strong against these slanderous claims. This is purely down to the number of pubs.
“I’m no statistician but I reckon I’ve been to 20-30 pubs around Dublin city as opposed to 4-5 boozers in other cities.
“I would argue that if you took my best five reviews from Dublin it would most certainly rival Galway and the other top cities”. To check out the full ratings, check out the Casino Source article here.
