The Karen meme has gone viral, but we have all met this stereotypical woman, and here are some things she might say.

10 signs you are DEFINITELY dealing with a KAREN.

You may have heard about the hilarious but true Karen stereotype that has people worldwide creating memes to poke fun at the specific things that ‘Karens’ typically do.

If you have never heard of this, sit back and be prepared to giggle. Here are the ten signs you are definitely dealing with a Karen.

  • The Karen meme has gone viral, but we have all met this stereotypical woman, and here are some things she might say.
    • 10. Closed-minded viewpoints – always controversial
    • 9. Says the food was terrible but ate it all – an awful meal
    • 8. Her attitude and rolling eyes – you will see it a mile away
    • 7. Refuses to follow the rules – they don’t apply to her
    • 6. Demanding behaviour – another level of complaining
    • 5. Threats – threats give her thrills
    • 4. One-liners – we’ve heard them all
    • 3. Complains directly to the chef – taking it too far
    • 2. Goes out of her way to cause a scene – the bigger, the better
    • 1. Asks to speak to your manager – the number one sign

10. Closed-minded viewpoints – always controversial

Karens are notorious for having closed-minded viewpoints, and you definitely know you are dealing with a Karen when there is no getting through to her. In fact, she won’t even let you get a word in.

Karens generally bring up the most controversial topics, almost as if they want to pick a fight, but it is always best not to let her get her way. Stay calm, and walk away!

9. Says the food was terrible but ate it all – an awful meal

This is one of the sure signs you're dealing with a Karen.

We have all experienced that one customer who complains about a meal she has eaten, even though she never mentioned anything when asked if everything was ok.

She hated the meal and hated it so much that she ate it all and is now asking for a refund. Go figure?

8. Her attitude and rolling eyes – you will see it a mile away

One of the top signs you are definitely dealing with a Karen is when she is approaching you with an entitled and rude attitude, perhaps even with rolling eyes to accompany this.

This is one of the most significant Karen behaviours, and she means business, mainly since complaining and getting her way drives her.

7. Refuses to follow the rules – they don’t apply to her

Refusing to follow the rules is one of the signs you're dealing with a Karen.

Karen is the one who will refuse to wear a mask during a pandemic, refuse to stop at the red light because she has places to be, or refuses to return an item with the receipt – because why should she?

One of the things you may hear Karen say when it comes to following the rules – or lack thereof, is, “But that doesn’t apply to me”.

6. Demanding behaviour – another level of complaining

Yes, plenty of people love to complain, Irish people included, but when it comes to the stereotypical Karen, she will complain in a way that comes across as very demanding.

For instance, Karen will be the one to complain that you spelt her name wrong on the coffee cup or charged her the incorrect amount for an item, just to see how far she can push the situation.

5. Threats – threats give her thrills

Karens love to cause a scene, and they love nothing more than telling you that you have lost her business and she will never come back as a customer, not to mention that she will tell all her friends about the terrible service.

She may say, “Do you even know how much money I spend here each month?”.

4. One-liners – we’ve heard them all

If she comes out with lots of one-liners, that's one of the signs you're dealing with a Karen.

There are sure one-liners which every Karen will use at one time or another to belittle others, and you may recognise some of these if you think you may have dealt with a Karen.

She may say things such as, “I refuse to follow your orders”, “That is not my responsibility”, “I’m calling the cops”, or even “How dare you speak to me that way”.

3. Complains directly to the chef – taking it too far

When complaining, we already know that Karens take it to the next level, but bringing their food directly to the chef while sporting a beetroot red face just takes the biscuit.

Karen will do whatever she can to get her point across, and if that means insulting the chef with her rudeness and attitude, that’s precisely what she will do.

2. Goes out of her way to cause a scene – the bigger, the better

Karens do not go under the radar, they do the opposite, and if you are wondering whether you may have met a Karen at one time or another, chances are you have.

This entitled lady will generally cause a huge scene to create embarrassment, draw attention and ultimately get her way, and she may even threaten to sue you. That’s Karen!

1. Asks to speak to your manager – the number one sign

At our number one spot is the common phrase used by every Karen out there – “Can I speak to your manager?”. This has to be one of the main signs you are definitely dealing with a Karen.

She may even threaten to get you fired for your awful customer service because Karen is always entitled to excellent service.
