Could a 28 Days Later sequel be in the works? Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original, says, “I’d love to do it”.

Cillian Murphy says he’d “love” to be a part of 28 Days Later sequel.

28 Days Later follows the story of a group of people trying to find sanctuary after a deadly and incurable virus spreads throughout the UK.

Released in 2002, the movie stars Cillian Murphy, with Brendan Gleeson, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, and Megan Burns featuring in supporting roles. The movie was directed by award-winning Danny Boyle.

A sequel was made in 2007 called 28 Weeks Later and starred Jeremy Renner. However, fans have eagerly been awaiting Cillian Murphy to reprise his iconic role. Now, the wait might just be over.

In 2002, the post-apocalyptic horror 28 Days Later took audiences around the world by storm. Cillian Murphy starred as Jim, a bike courier who awakes from a coma to find that the UK has been overrun by a deadly and incurable virus.

The ‘rage’ virus makes any infected person mad with extreme rage and an irrepressible hunger for blood.

The movie has long been a horror favourite and was nominated and received a number of awards upon release in 2002. At the time of its release, it grossed around €75 million at the box office around the world.

This was a huge success on a modest budget of €7.2, quickly becoming one of the most profitable horror films of the year.

In recent interviews, one of Cork’s most famous sons, Cillian Murphy has expressed his interest and enthusiasm for reprising his role in the world of 28 Days Later.

Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast about the movie, he said, “I’d love to do it. There needs to be a script, and Danny needs to find the time, and Alex (Garland) needs to feel that there’s more story to tell”.

The prospect of a sequel became a little bit more real when Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland hinted at a potential plot development.

Garland said, “A few years ago, an idea materialized in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later. Danny always liked the idea”.

Boyle also backed this up by revealing serious discussions about the possibility of a sequel to 28 Days Later.

When Cillian Murphy learned of potential discussions for a sequel to 28 Days Later, he said, “That’s great to hear.

“I didn’t know that – I would be there in a flash. I made two movies with both of those guys, and I would love to work with them again. Of course, I’m there”.

With Murphy’s enthusiasm and hints from both Danny Boyle and Alex Garland of a sequel to the highly coveted horror, hope for a thrilling continuation of the saga seems more tangible than ever.
