    10. Moloney – an ancient Irish last name

Moloney dates back to the 6th century.

This Irish last name dates back to the 6th century and is one of the most famous names in the country. Still, with that being said, it is quite often a name that utterly confuses people. However, the original – Ó Maoldomhnaigh – might be even more complex.

The 10 hardest-to-pronounce Irish last names.

Moran is one of the top names we cringe at when we hear it being mispronounced. In Ireland, it is pronounced ‘more-an’, while in other countries, you might commonly hear it as ‘more-ann’. It can sometimes be confused with the term ‘moron’, which is entirely different.

    7. O’Shea – a common mispronunciation

We can certainly understand that this Irish last name leaves many baffled since it looks like it should be pronounced as ‘o-shee’, but in reality, this tricky name is spoken as ‘o-shay’. We would like to say that this is one exception, but there are plenty more where this came from.

    6. Coughlan – the confusing letter combinations

A common theme in Irish names is the combination of ‘gh’, which can sometimes leave people baffled when they hear pronouncing it correctly. This name is said phonetically as ‘cock-lan’. Easy right? The unique letter combinations are one massive factor in leaving the world perplexed.

    5. Keogh – a popular name worldwide

The 10 hardest-to-pronounce Irish last names.

One of the hardest-to-pronounce Irish last names is Keogh, a name that has made it worldwide. It’s a pity the correct pronunciation stayed behind in Ireland, though. It’s simply ‘key-oh’, so next time you see this name, make sure you get it right.

    4. Magee – meaning the son of Hugh

Magee means the son of Hugh.

This ancient Irish name means “son of Hugh” and is a name that is well-known all over the country. However, the pronunciation of Magee is often mixed up. It really is as simple as it looks: ‘ma-gee’.

The name originates in the north of Ireland.

    3. Cahill – one of the simpler of them all

The 10 hardest-to-pronounce Irish last names.

This may seem like one of the simpler Irish surnames, and to us Irish, it is! Others often find it difficult to get their head around.

Is it ‘caw-hill’ or ‘cay-hill’? Neither! It is simply ‘cah-hill’! This is commonly heard worldwide, yet the proper pronunciation was left in Ireland.

    2. O’Donohue – a tongue twister for many

O’Donohue is a tongue twister for many.

This is one of the hardest-to-pronounce Irish last names, and while many get this one wrong, we have a simple trick to help you remember it from now on. Think of ‘Dunno, who?’ and you will never forget it!

It may look confusing, but it will stay once you’ve got this in your head. You’re welcome!
