Noise specialists may be called in to aid residents in a town in Tyrone who have been plagued by a mysterious humming noise recently.

Residents in the Tyrone town of Omagh in Northern Ireland have recently been dealing with a bizarre issue: a persistent humming noise disrupting their sleep and causing them general discomfort.

This peculiar noise has been dubbed the “Omagh hum” by the locals, who have now turned to the possibility of acquiring the services of noise specialists to aid them.

According to the council, the humming noise has been reported across a “wide area” of the Northern Irish town in recent weeks. So far, Omagh and Fermanagh District Council’s attempts to trace the mysterious noise have proven unsuccessful.

The council is now considering seeking the services of noise experts to finally get to the bottom of the source of this mysterious noise.

Alliance Party councillor Stephen Donnelly was initially contacted by residents of the Tamlaght Road area of the town in late October with complaints about the issue. He labelled the situation a serious problem as more reports of the noise emerge from across the town.

When talking about the mysterious noise, Mr Donnelly said that people “usually characterise it as a persistent buzz or hum” distinct from common noise such as traffic.

He also said that the noise had caused many people problems, such as sleep deprivation, because of the ongoing noise pollution. Mr Donnelly also underscored the council’s need to do everything in its power to find the source of the noise.

“It may well be that it’s seasonal or weather-related, but these things often don’t turn out to be simple, and it may be a multitude of sources,” Mr Donnelly explained. “What we need to do is establish the facts and get to the bottom of this and then take action to resolve this”.

A council spokeswoman revealed that thus far, the investigation had been very challenging.

“Due to the wide area where the sound has been reported, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact source,” she said. “Officers are currently investigating the use of specialist equipment, or procurement of a specialist company, to assist in detecting the source of the noise”.

The Hum – a strange phenomenon

The phenomenon known widely as “the Hum” has been reported worldwide several times over the last fifty years, including in North America, Australia, and the UK.

The residents of Omagh are not the only people who have suffered the effects of a mysterious humming noise. The phenomenon known widely as “the Hum” has been reported worldwide several times over the last fifty years, including in America, Australia, and the UK.

There have been many suggestions as to what is causing the noise. Some point towards farm or factory machinery, while some conspiracy theorists claim the noise comes from flying saucers.
