Irish-owned pet retailer Petmania.ie undertook a study of 1,600 proud puppy parents as part of their annual Puppy of the Year competition to discover which names topped the rankings in Ireland.
Revealing the top ten, we were surprised by some of the unique and creative entries that appeared, with a few well-known classics thrown in. So, did your little buddy’s name make the list of Ireland’s most popular puppy names right now?
The reigning champion – topping the list for the second year running
The results of the survey revealed that, for the second year running, Bailey topped the list of Ireland’s most popular puppy names. Perhaps down to the tear-jerking 2017 movie A Dog’s Purpose, this adorable name has captured the hearts of new pet owners in Ireland.
Closely following in second place was an adorable name for a little female pooch. Luna, which means ‘moon’ and comes from Roman mythology, just missed out on the top spot.
Third place was taken by Teddy, perhaps alluding to the cuddly nature of our little four-legged friends, while Milo followed in fourth place. Rosie came in fifth, followed by Bruno in sixth and Cooper in seventh.
Closing out the top ten, Ruby ranked eighth, followed by Bella in ninth and Max in tenth.
Changing trends from 2022 – some names remained popular
Some names, such as Teddy, Luna, Milo, and Bella, also ranked in the top ten of Ireland’s most popular puppy names in 2022. However, most names that proved popular in the previous year fell out of the rankings.
For example, Alfie ranked second place back in 2022 but didn’t even feature in the top ten this year. Similarly, Daisy, Lola, Bonnie, Buddy, and Molly also featured in 2022’s top ten list but didn’t rank for 2023.
Other interesting name trends – the rise of Gaeilge names and pop culture trends
While the survey revealed that Ireland’s most popular puppy names right now were all English-speaking names, it also revealed a rising number of names as Gaeilge.
Beautiful Irish names such as Éire, Lúnnagh, Fíbí, Cú Chulainn, Croía, Oráiste, Féirín, Óige, Taibhse, Samhain, Báinne, and Bó saw a spike in popularity among the island’s new puppy parents.
Similarly, food-inspired names saw a rise in popularity this last year. Cute monikers such as Biscuit, Toffee, Basil, Muffin, and Oreo are all popular choices among Ireland’s hungry pet parents.
Other trends included names taken from fictional characters. Lots of puppy parents opted for Wednesday and Barbie, taking inspiration from some of the biggest pop culture moments in 2023.
Aside from that, the survey also showed a huge number of Lokis, Thors, and Groots.
