An Irish teen has launched a waterproof clothing brand that could make frustrating alcohol spills and stains a thing of the past.
On a night out, you always want to look your best. Unfortunately, this is very difficult to do with the almost inevitable drink spillages that take place after a few too many.
However, a new waterproof clothing brand launched by an Irish teen could see drink spillages and stains become a thing of the past.
Drink spillages – a common frustration
If there’s anything more annoying than spilling a drink on yourself, it’s someone else spilling a drink on you. Come to think of it, if there’s anything worse yet, it’s someone spilling a drink on you when you’re sober.
That’s what happened consistently to Joe McClelland. The County Armagh teen made the decision a year ago to go sober while training for a triathlon.
“When I was younger, I was a big drinker. I would be out every weekend and couldn’t take it easy; I had to go full in,” he told Belfast Live.
“Then my mate and I decided to sign up for a triathlon, and due to all the heavy training, we thought we would have to stop going out drinking every weekend”.
Going sober, however, did not mean staying in: “After the nights of not drinking every weekend, we started to see we were having just as good a night without it. There was probably no point in drinking at all”.

The idea for Sober – “it was happening all the time on nights out”
On these sober nights out, McClelland started to realise that, more often than not, he would end up “absolutely soaked” from his drunk friends spilling drinks on him.
He told Belfast Live, “I realised that was happening all the time on nights out”.
He was aware of other waterproof clothing, but couldn’t find anything that suited his style for a night out.
Sober T-shirts – available to buy now
McClelland devised Sober as a stylish alternative to generic waterproof clothing and found a supplier to help produce a T-shirt. An unboxing video on TikTok generated a huge positive response that encouraged McClelland to place a bulk order and sell his T-shirts.
The limited-edition item is 100% cotton and will remain waterproof with line drying after a 30/30 wash.
In the coming months, McClelland aims to release a crop top as well as a second variation on the prototype. The first run of Sober T-shirts is available here.
