Many young Irish footballers are no longer just “promising” but are making their mark in professional football leagues.

Some are wonderkids who have impressed at their respective clubs, while others are youth-team players who have already set historic records. Here is our list of the five most exciting young Irish footballers to follow this year.

    5. Louie Barry – a creative young striker to watch

Louie Barry is a young, talented player who is taking Ligue One by storm as a Stockport County player and is expected to continue performing well.

Barry, who has declared his intention to represent the Republic of Ireland at the senior level, aims to return to his parent club, Aston Villa, after a third successful loan spell.

His goal-scoring prowess and proven performance in senior football show his tremendous potential to become one of the best footballers of all time.

    4. James Abankwah – the prolific defender ready to lead from the back

Abankwah has gained invaluable experience while playing for Championship club Watford on loan from Udinese.

The 22-year-old Irish defender is a big talent whose speed and physicality are valuable assets in competitive football. He is a young footballer to watch this year, having established himself as a mature and versatile player for club and country.

    3. Michael Noonan – a footballer proving that local talent is world-class

The Shamrock Rovers young star is considered one of the best young Irish footballers, whose rise to the top has been nothing short of remarkable.

In February 2025, the 17-year-old striker set a new record by becoming the youngest scorer in the UEFA Conference League, and most managers are watching him keenly.

Noonan is a top-class player who has shown prolific ability in youth competitions and has also transitioned well to senior football.

    2. Bosun Lawal – a versatile player destined for greatness

Bosun Lawal has emerged as Ireland’s new generation of young players and is hailed for his versatility and physical dominance.

He believes these qualities will help him excel as a senior player for the national team, having been successful in the Republic of Ireland under-19 team.

Lawal is a former Celtic youth player who moved to Stoke City, where he has consistently impressed with his style of play and excellent performances.

    1. Mason Melia – the teenage striker with exceptional potential

Mason Melia is a young Irish footballer who possesses all the qualities of a top striker. The 18-year-old forward has already established himself as a professional by displaying composure and maturity beyond his age.
