Acclaimed Irish actor Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Batman villain, the Penguin, in an eponymous television spin-off.
Colin Farrell is one of Ireland’s best actors and most high-profile figures. The Dublin actor has appeared in everything from blockbusters to independent films since his debut in Tim Roth’s The War Zone.
Farrell had a brief but memorable role as the Penguin in 2022’s The Batman alongside Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, and fellow Irishman Barry Keoghan and will reprise the character in an upcoming television spin-off, the trailer for which you can watch below.
Colin Farrell – one of Ireland’s best actors
Colin Farrell is one of the best Irish actors of his generation, indeed of all time. His performances have become synonymous with the work of Martin McDonagh, with Farrell appearing in the Irish filmmaker’s In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, and The Banshees of Inisherin.
Farrell’s performance in the latter earned him his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor, although he was ultimately pipped to the prize by Brendan Fraser.
He did, however, pick up a Golden Globe for his role as Pádraic Súilleabháin, an award he previously collected for In Bruges.
Beyond his work with McDonagh, Farrell garnered much critical acclaim for his roles in Yorgos Lanthimos’s films The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Lobster, as well as a string of other performances throughout his career.
The Batman – Farrell’s first appearance as the Penguin
The Dublin actor first appeared as the Penguin (aka Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobblepot) in Matt Reeves’s 2022 film, The Batman.
The film – with Robert Pattinson as the titular hero – was well-received and offered a much darker take on superhero films, more akin in mood to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Night Trilogy or Todd Phillips’s Joker than any other cinematic release by DC or Marvel.
In The Batman, Farrell’s Penguin has yet to become the crime kingpin depicted in the comics.
Reeves likened the character to John Cazale’s Fredo Corleone (The Godfather), telling Empire, “he’s a mid-level mobster guy, and he’s got a bit of showmanship to him, but you can see that he wants more and that he’s been underestimated”.
The Penguin – a television spin-off
In that Empire interview, Reeves revealed that the Penguin was “ready to make his move”. And fans won’t have to wait for a film sequel to The Batman to see it: upcoming television spin-off, The Penguin, will come out in 2024.
The Penguin sees an unrecognisable Farrell reprise his role as the titular villain, with the action taking place just “days after where The Batman ended”, according to Empire.
Streaming service Max is set to release The Penguin in late 2024. It will consist of eight episodes and will, Empire reports, “[explore] the moves that Cobblepot makes in the power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone’s departure”.
