More great news for Ireland’s movie industry as a new film is set to screen at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival.

Irish film to premiere at Berlin International Film Festival.

It has been a good start to 2023 for the Irish film industry. The success and acclaim of recent films The Banshees of Inisherin and An Cailín Ciúin warranted their inclusion in the upcoming Academy Awards.

Actor Paul Mescal also gained award recognition for his performance in Scottish film, Aftersun. Moreover, Irish-produced animation, A Greyhound of a Girl, will debut at the illustrious Berlin International Film Festival this month.

The film, based on the Roddy Doyle novel of the same name, tells the story of a young girl who aspires to be a chef. It is the latest work by Italian director Enzo D’Alò.

It stars Brendan Gleeson, who also received an Oscar nomination for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin. Gleeson performs alongside Mia O’Connor and Charlene McKenna (of Peaky Blinders fame), among others.

Ireland and UK-based JAM Media produced A Greyhound of a Girl, and executive producer John Rice is excited for the film to debut.

“We are honoured to have the world premiere of A Greyhound of a Girl at the distinguished Berlin International Film Festival,” he said. “We are delighted about this great news and would like to thank our wonderful team and partners.”

It marks the latest in a string of successful productions for JAM Media, including hit children’s TV shows Nova Jones, Jessy and Nessy, and Becca’s Bunch.

The Berlin International Film Festival – or Berlinale – is one of the most prestigious in the world. Along with Venice and Cannes, it comprises Europe’s “Big Three”. In addition, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Berlin yearly.

Further debuts of this year’s festival include Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me. Meanwhile, there will be a special homage to Steven Spielberg, who will pick up the festival’s Honorary Golden Bear.

The Berlin International Film Festival runs from 16 February to 26 February. Greyhound of a Girl first screens on 18 February as part of the Generation Kplus category.
